Often times we believe in the "I want it now" approach and try to turn to the easiest way to get what we want. When it comes to our health, we think it should be easy to erase years of poor habits with a simple pill. We think a magic pill should be the instant cure. So when it comes to sleepless nights, as well as any other health issue, I strive to address what the underlying problem may be. This might mean I need to change things, put in a little effort and even give up what I really don't want to give up.
So what's the answer? Maybe it's as simple as returning to nature.
- Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible (the way that they were created - ogranic, fresh, raw when possible and unprocessed.)
- Drink purified water, the fluid that was put on earth for all creatures to drink.
- Live a lifestyle that minimizes negative, toxic and damaging effects on the body.
- Provide your body with all the necessary raw materials that are required by your body to function, grow, repair and heal.
- Balance physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energetic aspects of life.
- Omega-3 essential fats required for nerves
- Stress relief/relaxation techniques
- Consider herbs such as Chamomile and valerian
- Deep breathing techniques
- Exercise, activity, sunshine, outdoors and fresh air
- Sleep in complete darkness; no night light, etc. This promotes melatonin
- Blood sugar fluctuations / hypoglycemic tendencies
- Possible triggers, allergies, sensitivities
- Toxic household cleaning, laundry and personal care products and/or poor air quality
- Sugar and chemical laden processed foods
- Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco
- Do not watch or read upsetting TV shows/books before bed
- Avoid eating in the 2-3 hours before bed
- Avoid exercise before bed
- Multivitamins and protein is a basic foundation
- Calcium / Magnesium / VitalMag: Taken before bed improves absorption, promotes relaxation and restful sleep.
- Gentle Sleep Complex: a unique blend of valerian, passion flower and chamomile flower to promote restful sleep.
- Stress Relief Complex: nutritional support to help you relax and stay calm.
- DTX, Herb-Lax: the gut lining houses over half the immune system and half the detoxification system. If the gut isn't perfectly healthy, you are at a standstill in terms of healing any other condition, regardless of how remotely unconnected to the gut it may appear.
- Alfalfa
For every symptom is a God-given opportunity to find and fix what is broken, versus sentencing the innocent patient to a lifetime of some expensive and damaging drug. For with drugs, the sick get sicker quicker. - Why Do I Feel This Way

These are great tips, some of which I hadn't heard of before. I'm off to check out some of your links. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad these were helpful, Gena and that I could provide some ideas you've never heard of before.
DeleteGreat tips! The tip about sleeping in complete darkness is one everyone should follow and we should follow with our children it helps their nights be more restful to. If you child needs a nightlight try to put it in a far away corner of the room not near their bed.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, that is so true. I never even thought about it reference to removing the night light for children to sleep better. Thanks for your insight!
DeleteMid first trimester, I was having the hardest time falling asleep. Read something in What to Expect that said, don't go to bed unless you're tired. Smack head. Duh. I was trying too hard. So, I just read a book or something, and I fall asleep pretty easily. Keeps lights low. Have a routine. Don't drink caffeine. By mistake I did that yesterday...up til like 2am. Then J woke up several times that night. Greeeeeat.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Yup, finding a way to relax your body first is so helpful, instead of trying to force it. Those times are rough when our kiddos wake us.
DeleteGreat tips. I especially like your advice on supplements. I think it's important to look at diet and consider what's missing in a diet. My husband has candida and arthritis so he could use anything to heal his gut. Never heard of Herb-Lax. I'll need to check it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tracey! I never considered supplements before I became "green." All makes sense though. Yes, cleaning out and healing the gut would be a great help for your husband, for sure!
DeleteThese are great suggestions. Too often we are given medications and supplements to solve problems that given time and the right resources can be dealt with naturally. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I think medications are way over used.
DeleteWow, a lot of suggestions! I must look into omega-3 as a sleep promoter, it's generally good for you, anyway. And magnesium.
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely!
DeleteLove how most of the time, it's just getting rid of the artificial "normal" stuff in our lives and getting back to the natural that will help us to sleep.
ReplyDeleteSo true Brittany! I think getting back to natural helps with many healthy issues!
